A new study, reported in Science Translational Medicine, ( Feb 2012) has found that Massage Therapy actually reduced the inflammatory response by turning off genes associated with inflammation and turning on genes that help tissues to heal. Following Massage Therapy, leg muscles had 30% more of a gene that helps muscles repair and a 3 times less of the agent involved with inflammation. Dr. Tarnopolsky, a professor at MacMaster University in Hamilton, said that massage works quite differently from NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatories, which reduce inflammation and pain but may actually retard healing.
